How much does the government make on a gallon of gas in taxes?

Gasoline taxes go directly to pay for roads, and in my opinion that makes the gasoline tax the best possible tax we could have - one that is paid by the people who use the actual resource and infrastructure.
That the recent run-up in gas prices has so many people yelling to roll back environmental regulations and suspend taxes on gasoline is a testament to a society that is as short-sighted as it is greedy.
