Fill 'Er Up
We interrupt the hysteria over rising gas prices in America for the following bulletin:
Average Gasoline Prices in 10 Cities
Olso....................$6.90
Paris...................$6.77
London...............$6.28
Brussels..............$6.16
Rome..................$5.91
Berlin..................$5.96
Tokyo.................$5.77
Hong Kong..........$5.62
Sydney...............$3.44
Philadelphia.......$3.01
Prices are in U.S. dollars for a U.S. gallon of unleaded regular (3.785 litres)
Prices are those posted as of early to mid-April, 2006
Sources: CNN and various gas-price web sites.
P.S. The vehicle pictured above is a Hummer H2. It has a 32-gallon gas tank. It would cost $208.80 to fill 'er up in Oslo. Which may explain why you don't see any H2's in Oslo. In Philly, it would cost a mere $96.32.

Thank you. One of my favorite things about visiting Europe is seeing all the tiny cars and mopeds on the streets. It would be incredible if we could have that in Philadelphia.
4x4s are called Chelsea Tractors in London.
Rich housewives are clogging up the streets in London when they are doing the school run.
Kids can’t get to school unless mommy drives then. It is a bliss when it is school holidays … for all.
It would, it would allow us to trim down some of these large streets we have(Market, Broad, Delaware, JFK, Roosevelt, etc.)
Some of the costs of the gas in those countries are higher taxes, which provide them with additional services, such as healthcare, which we don't have.
Great post Ferrick. It was like Joe Friday and Dragnet- just the facts nothing but the facts. Some of your readers are such whiners telling others what they should drive.
This is still America and I say you can drive whatever you want to drive. See that H3, I am buying one next month.
I walk to work. It's been 6 weeks since I put gas in my Ford Escort. I don't even know the price anymore.
go buy your Hummers and SUV's. I'm saving money, staying in shape and getting my coffee at the corner shop.
Following up on gretchen's comment ... gas taxes in Europe are substantially higher and fund a number of causes, including efficient public transportation systems. Why republish your numbers with a column showing the price without federal and state taxes? Thanks!
32 gallon tank + $6.90 for a gallon of gas in Oslo is $220.08. a bit more than was listed in the column.
Socialism is socialism. You forget to mention that. The entire continent operates under different social parameters. I wish I could take ten weeks off and never get fired from my dead end job too. Europe is not America. Period. Stop trying to make it so.
I know it is hard to make every point with a hundred years of history and cause and effect corroboration but...
Do a study about the cost and quality of healthcare in Europe as a follow up. Tell me how government provides for the people. Tell me how safer it is there. Tell me that religion is not suppressed, or speech for that matter. Tell me why my SUV matters in the discussion but 18 wheel diesels and school buses dont. Tell me how Walmart is the cause of this.
Whew, I need a nap. Wish I was in Portugal.
